>> reporter: ted kennedy, jr. and patrick kennedy shared their thoughts about their father in massachusetts today. friends, family, and colleagues celebrated the senator for the good he did and the dream he kept alive. good evening. i'm sherrie johnson. after a moving funeral in his home state of massachusetts, senator kennedy was eulogized on capitol hill and laid to rest alongside his brothers john and robert at arlington national cemetery. har's abc's viviana hurtado. ♪ [music] ♪ >> reporter: senator edward kennedy was honored by the army for his service before being laid to rest at arlington national cemetery near his slain brothers john and robert. people lined the streets of washington to bid farewell while former staffers gathered at the capitol where he worked for nearly 50 years on sweeping social legislation including the civil rights act.

his family became one of the most powerful political dynasties in history. president obama called senator kennedy the greatest legislator of our time. >> was given the gift of time that his brothers were not. he used that gift to touch as many lives and right as many wrongs as the years would allow. >> reporter: he told his son after losing his leg to cancer to never give up. >> i said, i'll never be able to climb up that hill. and he said, i know you can do it. there is nothing that you can't do. we're gonna climb that hill together. even if it takes us all day. sure enough, he held me around my waist and we slowly made it to the top.

>> reporter: saturday's events mark the four days of private and public mourning for senator kennedy remembered as the staunchest of liberals who could cut deals as opponent and devoted family man. authorities call it one of the worst cases of animal cruelty and hoarding. 21 dogs were rescued. the home was in terrible condition with fee sees piledp a couple of feet high. several years ago, neighbors say they he took it upon themselves to clean up this family's act. >> at one time, we had gotten trapped cats. it was 70-something cats we had trapped between a couple of the neighbors. it was like this for as long as i could remember. >> reporter: we have learned the home in orchard beach is

owned by janet taylor. no charges have been filed. the dogs are recovering at the animal control center until they are healthy enough for adoption. for more information about how you can donate or adopt any of the dogs, head to our web site at abc2news.com. that's been an increase in the number of bats flying around the city of baltimore. so far, more than 100 people have reported having the animals inside their home hes. >> bats are inquisitive, and what they'll do is find any crack, any chink in your home and no matter where it goes. they'll be flying along and feel cool air through a crack because there's air conditioning inside. cool air reminds them of caves, et cetera, and they'll try to go right to that small crack. >> reporter: five of the bats captured inside city homes have tested positive for rabies. animal control officers say if you found a bat in your home, do not touch it and call 311

immediately. now to a developing story out of georgia, police found seven people dead and two seriously hurt in brunswick. police found the victims while responding to a 911 call this morning. officers would not say how the victims died. last year, he survived a plane crash that killed four people but tonight celebrity disk jockey deejay a.m. is dead. investigators say drug paraphernalia was found in the apartment. the circumstances surrounding his death are unclear. he performed at hollywood's most exclusive party and dated nicole richie and mandy moore. he was just 36 years old. police in california have expanded the crime scene to not only the man's home who was accused of kidnapping a girl 18 years ago but their neighbor's home. they want to see if he's linked

to other cases in the area including the unsolved murders of prostitutes. phillip and nancy garrido are accused of kidnapping jaycee dugard. dugard has two daughters with garrido. a wildfire is inching closer to a community in los angeles. the huge fire knocked out power to more than 150 homes. people have been told to leave their homes as the fire continues to burn in the san great britainial mountains. crews hope to keep the flames from spreading to nearby mount wilson where the observatories are located. three people have been hurt. this weekend has been another washout along the east coast thanks to the remnants of tropical storm danny. the storm brought heavy rain and dangerous rip currents from the carolinas to new england. large waves kept most people out of the water at beach as long the new jersey shore. witnesses recorded waves as high as 8 feet.

wave heights are expected to return to normal by tomorrow. it's the second weekend the atlantic was hit by a tropical storm system. a storm blew quickly through our area tonight bringing lightning and heavy rain. in baltimore county, police had to shut down one lane of 695 because of the clogged storm drains. meteorologist susan "shrek" is here with us now with the first forecast. >> thanks a lot. good evening, everyone. we had a couple of thunderstorms rumbling through. most of you are saying i didn't hear any. you can see they are very select. when they hit, they did create problems. as far as the rain oments, towson so you half an inch, and now it's moving towards the eastern shore. so heavy rain at times. for the rest of the tonight, mostly cloudy. maybe a few showers left over.

. a second baltimore area bank has failed. bradford bank has been shut down by federal regulators. the barch was given two weeks to sell or be taken over. all nine branches have reopened today at m & t banks. both m & t and fdic will share the losses on about $338 million worth of bradford's loans and other assets. customers should not be affected or even notice a change. bradford becomes the second maryland bank to fail in these tough times behind crofton bank suburban federal savings. in these tough times it's not just businesses that are suffering but counties taking hits as well. officials announced a soarries of budget cuts. the cuts include a hiring freeze and eliminating 107 vacant positions. the county hopes to save $2 million from the hiring freeze and another 15 million over the next three years by renegotiating health care contracts. as kids, we're all told to share. in these tough times, adults

i'll tell you, susan, you blink around here and the weather changes. at first this afternoon, it was nice that the sun even came out. then what happens? later tonight? >> we had an ominous start to the day and then we had the sun shane and everybody got happy. when that sunshine does makes the atmosphere unstable. any thunderstorm can make it pop. that's what happened tonight. a lot of people are watching tonight saying i didn't see anything. >> right. >> that's because it was very localized as to where it dropped. so right now, you can see the wet streets out there. the wind is light out of the north-northwest at 3 miles per hour. there's your conditions for the bay. high tide at 3:21 in the afternoon. low tide in the morning and winds are out of the northwest 5 to 10. they are going to get stronger in the afternoon, gusting as

high as 25. taking a look, yeah, we'll look at maryland's most powerful radar here. you can see the storms develop out of nowhere, bubbled up, move add cross the region right now heading over towards the eastern shore. these were very localized. most of them didn't see them but where they did drop a heavy amount of rain. towson saw more than .6 of an inch. more than that, manassas burtonville thought we haven't started registering them on the eastern shore for the most part. they were seeing reports from a half inch to .6 as well. that happened in a short amount of time. taking a look at the satellite radar, this is what was left of tropical storm danny around noontime. and it just sort of dissipated, fell apart. it's up off the coast of maine right now. it's not causing any problems to anyone except folk as long

the coast. winds are at 35 miles per hour again up along the coast of maine and beyond in the next couple of hours. so really not causing any problems except for folk as long the coast, anyone trying to enjoy the weather along the beach. ing see around ocean city, maryland's coastline, very large waves, 4 to 6 feet along the coast and very dangerous rip currents will occur for another day or so. then things should start to calm down a bit. taking a look at the wider picture, there's danny. what we have to worry about tonight is the cold front. you can see that stripe of shower activity and storms. that passes through in the overnight hours. then things get infinitely better for us weather-wise as we head into the next couple of days. for example, that front comes thousand and stalls out, cooler drier air's behind it. normally when the fronts stall out it's right over top of us and things get unsettled. it will stall out well to the south and east of us along the coastline. so all that rain and stormy

activity is confined to the south and east of us. so we are going to be in the cheer so to speak looking at very nice weather. tonight, 64 degrees, mostly cloudy. a couple of leftover showers shouldn't be a big deal. for tomorrow, 83 degrees, partly sunny. a lot less humid. we will feel drier. as we head into the next seven days, 74 degrees for monday. these are highs for tuesday. it certainly will feel very terrible, a lot better. as the early part of next week, we may see a stray shower or two happen on wednesday afternoon. beunderthat we get warmer towards the end of the week. the ravens starter $what they had to do in the third preseason game. the offense moved the ball up and down the field with very few problems.

[whistlele blows ] >> coach stresses being a family, you know? coming together. these are your brothers. you rely on your brothers. the fact that we really emphasized family, we stayed tight and everybody's watching each other's backs and translated on to the field. >> i expect them to compete and play harder and play for 60 minutes. i liked the chemistry that they are developing. they are finally starting to understand the true meaning of family, good and bad. it ain't pretty but at least it's real.
